Hele 35 år har gått siden det lille spillselskapet HAL ble grunnlagt i Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Hvorfor heter selskapet HAL, spør du kanskje? Forbausende nok valgte selskapet HAL fordi hver bokstav var en foran IBM.
IBM var som kjent den største giganten på elektronikkmarkedet i 1980 og mange drømte nok om å frarøve dem tronen.
HAL er kanskje mest kjent for Kirby-spillene, samt Mother (EarthBound i andre land) og Super Smash Bros. serien,
men det var på MSX og Commodore VIC-20 at de slapp sine første spill (slik som Mr. Chin).
De ga også ut en omstridt PAC-MAN klone til VIC-20 kalt Jelly Monsters. Da Atari i USA – som hadde lisens til hjemmekonsollversjoner av PAC-MAN på denne tiden – fikk høre om dette ble spillet raskt trukket tilbake.
